Sébastien Loeb is maybe the greatest pilot of all time. In addition to having won nine times in the World Rally Championship, Loeb has showed on several occasions to be very strong also in other categories: for example, during the Pikes Peak 2013 where he played every record and is not far behind in new adventure that began this year, the World Touring Car Championship.
– You won 9 WRC titles and Pikes Pike. Are you going to win a Dakar too?
As I said, my focus is to win the WTCC title. This is my main target and I am only thinking about it. Before thinking of a win on the Dakar, we have to see if I will race there one day. And if yes, when.
– How do you feel after winning a World Championship?
The first title was an accomplishment. It was a dream comes true. After, it was always a great pleasure because the title means a lot. So much effort, including the team! Sometimes, it’s difficult to realize all these things. You have this feeling of pride because you have shown you are the best in your series, and in the world at the end of the season.
– Will we see you back in WRC for some wild-card races soon or later?
It’s not on schedule right now.
– Which difficulties did you have swichting from a rally to a touring car?
The main difference is that I have to fight with a lot of competitors in the field. I have to express myself differently, having to do a lot of overtake. You need experience for this kind of thing. The other difference is that you need to optimize your driving style at the maximum. On a racetrack, you have to find every tenth of a second. The philosophy is different, maybe less natural. On a qualifying lap, you have only one chance, and you have no make your best three sectors, without any mistake in any corner. In Rally, you can make a little mistake, you have maybe 300 others corners after! I don’t know if we can say, these are difficulties, but it’s different and I have to manage this.
– How do you consider the environment of WTCC? Is it better than WRC?
We can’t say that it’s more or less great than rally. In rally and WTCC, the whole atmosphere is very nice with the other drivers and teams. Regarding the ambiance, it depends on the countries that we visit. On some countries, there are a lot of fans. On other, there are less fans. But overall, in the paddock, we have good relationship as in rally. These are two great championships.
– What did you feel when you won for the first time in WTCC in Morocco?
Well, it was a great satisfaction! When I started the WTCC campaign, I didn’t know how would be this new environment. I didn’t where I would be in terms of performance. It was a good point to see that I was fighting with my teammates right from the start. It was a big satisfaction to win during the first weekend. I hope that there will be more satisfactions in a near future.
– Do you get on well with your teammates Jose Maria Lopez and Yvan Muller? And with the crew?
I have a good relationship with my two teammates. They are two strong competitors and there is a great atmosphere in the team. Regarding the crew, it’s still a very nice ambiance. I know all these guys from the rally so it’s nice. And if we race all together in WTCC after WRC, it’s also because we all have strong human links.
– You own an Endurance team that raced in Le Mans and is actually running the ELMS. Do you like the world of Endurance? What is your opinion about the new LMP3?
I like the experience that I had in sportscar, making two-times Le Mans. Personally, my goal is to win the title in WTCC and I am focus on it. Regarding the team, we have made Le Mans this year, with a good result. We will see in the future what are the options. We are, at the moment, focused on the end of the season, fighting for the titles in Porsche Cup and GT.
– We recall that years ago you did a test of F1 in Abu Dhabi driving a Toro Rosso. Would you have liked to pursue a career pilot of Formula 1?
I made a F1 test after winning the WRC. It was a kind of gift/reward from Red Bull. My times were good, and they were surprised by it. There was at a time the idea to make a race but we didn’t make it. It was not a disappointment for me as F1 was not one of my dream like rally was for example.
